Kamalpreet Kaur is an Indian Athlete (Sports- Discus Throw). Kamapreet is the first Indian Woman to breach the 65m barrier in Discus Throw. She is supported by GoSports Foundation through the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Program. Kamalpreet Kaur always wanted to illuminate the name of her country.
Kamalpreet Kaur set a national record in the discus throw with an attempt of 65.06 m and qualified for the summer Olympics in Tokyo. She extended her record to 66.59m at the Indian Grand Prix-4 at the NIS, Patiala, on 21 June 2021.
Since childhood, Kamalpreet wasn’t interested in her studies. Due to her physique, her school Physical Education trainer suggested her try hands-on athletics. In 2012, she then participated discus throw in the state meet and finished in 4th position. Since 2014, Kamalpreet has taken sport seriously and started her initial training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in her village. In 2016, she became the national champion in the U-18 and U-20 at the National Junior Athletics Championships.

Kamapreet Kaur in Tokyo Olympics 2020
Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur produced one of the best performances by an Indian in the Olympics, though in a qualifying round, as she made it to the finals of the ongoing Games after finishing second.
The 25-year-old Kaur, competing in qualification B, sent the discus to a distance of 64m in her third and final attempt to be one of the only two automatic qualifiers for the final round, the other being American Valarie Allman (66.42m).
Kamalpreet Kaur finished sixth in the discus throw event at the Tokyo Olympics Final.

Kamapreet Kaur was born on 04 March 1996 and hails from Badal, a village in the Sri Muktsar Sahib District of Punjab. As of 2021, she is 25 years old. Kamalpreet’s height is approx 6 feet and 1 inch.
Kamalpreet did her schooling at Dasmesh Girls Senior Secondary School, Badal, Punjab, and later completed her Graduation from Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjab.

At the 2019 Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship with a throw of 60.25m, she won a Gold medal and made history at the 24th Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships, when she became the first Indian woman to breach the 65m barriers in the discus throw and finished at the top of the podium the second time in a row.
In Tokyo Olympics 2020, Kamalpreet Kaur has made a place in the finals. She threw 60.29 meters in the first attempt, while the disc threw 63.97 meters in the second attempt. In the third attempt, she secured the final quota with 64 meters.

Interesting Facts About Kamalpreet Kaur
- She did not have an interest in studies while she was in school. During an interview, while talking about her school, she said,
“During the class VIII exams, I just managed 33 marks each in Maths and English. There was a slight improvement in the class X boards, but I realised that I was not going anywhere with my studies. I knew that if things continued like this I would not get a job. This was also the time when I had taken part in a sports event and did well. People liked my height and built and suggested that I give sports a try.” - She was interested in sports since her school days and wanted to become a professional cricketer, but her sports teacher in school asked her to participate in athletics. She then participated in various athletic activities like shot put and discus throw and won many prizes.
- Initially, she started with the shot put but then shifted her focus to the discus throw.
- She then moved to a hostel and started her professional training at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in her village.
- With her hard work and training, she became the U-18 and U-20 national champion in discus throw in 2016.
- She participated in the World University Games held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2017 and stood 5th in it.
- She then appeared for the clerical exam of the Indian Railways and cleared the exam. It was a great relief for her to get a regular salary from her job as her family’s financial condition was not good. In an interview, while talking about it she said,
“At times the Punjab government would offer a cash prize after I won medals at the national level. But there was no regular support. You know even my shoes cost Rs 10,000. In 2017, I got a job as a clerk in Railways. The salary was just Rs 21,000, but it came every month, and that was a huge support.”
- During an interview, she shared how she trained for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown. She said,
“I used the double bed at home as weights. The bed is filled with clothes so I used it for my deadlift exercises. I used the flower pots at home as dumbbells. I did all the exercises I could at home and ran in the fields.” - In an interview, Kaur’s father shared that he could not watch the Tokyo Olympics 2020 finals qualifying match of his daughter as he had to work in the fields.
- Kamalpreet has been honoured by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and received a cheque of Rs. 2 lakhs and a ‘siropa’ (robe of honour) by the SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur in Amritsar.
