Bajrang Punia is a FreeStyle Wrestler from INDIA. Bajrang Punia is India’s biggest hope for a medal at The Tokyo Olympics. Bajrang Punia competes in the 65 kg weight category. Bajrang Punia was born on February 29, 1994, in the Jat Family in Khundan village of Jhajjar district, Haryana. As of 2019, his total earnings were INR 2.4 crore, according to Forbes’ report. He was awarded Arjuna Award in 2015.

Punia is the first Indian wrestler to be ranked World No. 1 in any category, the first Indian to win two world championship medals, and the first Indian to play in the renowned German League.

Hailing from Jhajjar, Haryana, Bajrang Punia has risen fast to become the beacon of Indian wrestling and owes much of it to the influence the sport had on him as a kid.

Moreover, his father Balwan Singh was a wrestler himself and a young Bajrang Punia would often escape school to watch the beefy wrestlers in action. “I never realized when it became a part of me,” Bajrang Punia said later.

Currently, he works in Indian Railways on the post of Gazetted officer OSD Sports. Punia enjoys seeking out knowledge of his village elders.

Bajrang Punia in Tokyo Olympics 2020

Bajrang Punia won the 1/8 match in the 65 weight category defeating Ernazar Akmataliev (Kyrgyzstan). And in 1/4 65 Weight category match Bajrang Punai again won the match defeating Morteza Ghiasi (Iran) by pin down. Bajrang Punia lost the Semi-Finals by Haji Aliyev(Azerbaijan). But in the Bronze Medal match, Bajrang Punia won the match by 8-0 and won the Bronze Medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Bajrang Punia Early Life

Bajrang Punia was born in Punia Jat Family. He began wrestling at the age of seven and was encouraged to pursue the sport by his father. His family did not have money for traditional sports. Instead, he had to partake in free sports like wrestling and Kabaddi. Punia’s father was a wrestler as well and at a young age, his family started him at a local mud wrestling school. Bajrang sometimes skips school to go to wrestling practice. In 2015, his family moved to Sonipat so that he can attend a regional center of the Sports Authority of India.

Bajrang Punia Wrestling Career

In 2013, Bajrang Punia appeared for Asian Wrestling Championships in this he lost in the semi-finals by 3-1 to Hwang Ryong-hak of South Korea and he won the Bronze medal in the freestyle 60 kg category. Then in the same year, he participated in World Wrestling Championships he grabbed the Bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 60 kg category.

Commonwealth Games 2014

Bajrang Punia won the Silver medal in the men’s freestyle 61 kg category, after losing 1-4 to David Tremblay of Canada.

Asian Games 2014

In Incheon, South Korea, he won the Silver medal in the Men’s freestyle 61 kg category, after losing 1-3 to Masoud Esmaeilpour of Iran.

Asian Wrestling Championship 2014

In Astana, Kazakhstan, Bajrang won the Silver medal in the men’s freestyle 61 kg category, losing 0-4 to Masoud Esmaeilpour of Iran.

World Wrestling Championship 2015

Unlike his fellow Narsingh Yadav, Bajrang wasn’t able to win a medal at the tournament in Las Vegas and finished 5th.

In the Round of 32, he met Batboldyn Nomin of Mongolia who beat him 10-0. With the Mongolian qualifying for the final bout in the 61 kg category, Bajrang got a chance to contest in the Repêchage round. His first opponent in the repêchage round was Reece Humphrey of the USA whom he beat 6-0 easily. The second repêchage opponent was Beka Lomtadze from Georgia who put up a fight but was ultimately overcome 13-6 by the Indian. Unfortunately, he fell at the last hurdle, drawing the bronze medal bout 6-6 but his opponent Vasyl Shuptar of Ukraine, scoring the last point.

In 2017 May, Bajrang won a Gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship held in Delhi.

Bajrang was the second acquisition of the JSW owned Bangalore franchise in the auction conducted in New Delhi. The wrestler was picked up for a sum of Rs 29.5 lakh.

Commonwealth Games 2018

In Gold Coast, Australia, he won the Gold medal in the men’s freestyle 65 kg category. He overcame Kane Charig of Wales by Technical Superiority to clinch the gold.

Asian Games 2018

On August 19, he won the Gold medal in the Men’s freestyle 65 kg. He defeated Japanese Wrestler Takatani Daichi 11-8; the score was locked at 6-6 after the first round.

2018 World Wrestling Championships

Bajrang won Silver Medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships. After that Silver Medal, he claimed: “World No. 1” in the 65 kg category.

2019 World Wrestling Championships

Bajrang won a Bronze medal for the second time at a World Championship, thereby qualifying India for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the 65 kg freestyle wrestling event.

2020 Rome Ranking Series

On 18 January, Bajrang defeated Jordan Oliver 4-3 in the final in the 65 kg freestyle category at the Ranking Series.

2021

In 2021, he won the Gold medal in the 65 kg event at the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series 2021 held in Rome, Italy.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games gold medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia has donated his six months’ salary to the relief fund for coronavirus patients in Haryana. “We have to be careful from the virus,” Punia said. “We will be able to compete at the Olympics only if we stay alive,” he added.
