Ravi Kumar Dahiya is also known as Ravi Kumar is an Indian Freestyle Wrestler who won a Bronze medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in the 57 kg category and secured a place in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Since the age of 10, Ravi Kumar was under the wings of Coach Satpal Singh who is also the former coach of two-time Olympic medallist, Sushil Kumar. The wrestler also hails from a village that has produced many excellent wrestlers including Phogat sisters, Bajrang Punia & Yogeshwar Dutt. No wonder, why the wrestling bug bit Ravi in his early phase of life. Ravi Kumar may be a man with few words but he has talent in abundance.
But the prevailing financial crisis came as a hurdle in Dahiya’s wrestling career. Working in a rented paddy field, his father, Rakesh Kumar Dahiya, struggled to meet ends. But he didn’t let his son give up on his ambition.
Senior Dahiya would travel daily from his village to the Chhatrasal Stadium to deliver milk and fruit to Ravi Kumar Dahiya.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya Medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020
Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya on 5 August 2021 clinched an Olympic Silver medal after losing his 57 kg final to Russian two-time defending world champion Zavur Uguev. The ROC wrestler registered a 7-4 win against Dahiya.
There were expectations that the 23-year-old Dahiya would become India’s youngest Olympic champion but the Russian defended well to win comfortably.
On Winning Silver Medal Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted,
“Ravi Kumar Dahiya is a remarkable wrestler! His fighting spirit and tenacity are outstanding. Congratulations to him for winning the Silver Medal at Tokyo 2020. India takes great pride in its accomplishments.”

Ravi Kumar Dahiya Early Life
Ravi Kumar Dahiya was born in 1997 and hails from the village of Nahri in Sonipat district, Haryana. While a passion for wrestling always burned inside Ravi, his financial condition made him toil a lot to overcome all the obstacles in his life. His father not owning land by his own rented farms for a living.
In order to buy fruits for Ravi, his father almost covered 40 kilometers from Nahri to Delhi. Throughout his wrestling journey, his needs were somewhere a financial burden. However, Ravi’s father did not see his son’s performance where he earned a bronze medal at the Worlds. He never got a chance to watch Ravi perform because he was toiling in the fields. Rakesh Kumar worked hard to ensure that his son would never have to compromise on his ambition.

Ravi Kumar Dahiya Wrestling Career
Ravi Kumar started his training at the age of 10 when his father enrolled him at the Chhatrasal Stadium in New Delhi. He started his practice under the guidance of the 1982 Asian Games gold medalist, Satpal Singh. Ravi made his International debut with the 2015 Junior Wrestling Championship in Salvador da Bahia.
In his World Championships debut in 2019, Dahiya defeated the European champion Arsen Harutyunyan in the round of 16, and the 2017 world champion Yuki Takahashi in the quarterfinal, to earn one of the six available quota places for the 2020 Summer Olympics. He settled for bronze after losing to defending champion and eventual gold medalist Zaur Uguev in the semifinal round.
In the 2019 Asian Wrestling Championship in Xi’an, China. Ravi Kumar stood fifth in the competition as he lost the match for the Bronze medal.
In the 2020 Senior Asian Championship during the trials, Ravi Kumar Dahiya qualified for the 57 kg weight category after he dominated Pankaj from Air Force by defeating him with a score of 10-0.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya won a Gold medal in both the 2020 Asian Wrestling Championship and the 2021 Asian Wrestling Championship.
In June 2021, Ravi Dahiya participated in the Poland Open in Warsaw and defeated Gulomjon Abdullaev in the opening round. However, in the final round, Ravi Dahiya was defeated by Uzbekistan’s Gulomjon Abdullaev in the 61 kg final, and Ravi had to settle for a Silver medal.
