Sumit Antil won a Gold Medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics
Sumit Antil broke the world record thrice with three of his six javelin throws in the final of the Tokyo Paralympics on Monday. With this, World No. 1 in the F64 category, Sumit Antil won India’s second gold in the Tokyo Paralympics and the first in athletics.
In fact, he bettered the previous world record of 62.88m, also set by him, five times on the day. His last throw was a foul. His series read 66.95, 68.08, 65.27, 66.71, 68.55, and foul.

Sumit Antil Early Life
Sumit Antil was born on 06 July 1998 in Khewda, Sonipat, India. He lost his left leg below the knee after he was involved in a motorbike accident in 2015.
Sumit Antil is supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Para Champions Programme. Sumit was introduced to Para athletics by another para-athlete, Rajkumar, while he was pursuing his B.Com in Delhi.
In 2017, Sumit started training under Nitin Jaiswal in Delhi, and from then he started competing in various National and International platforms. Sumit displayed very early on that he had the skill and ability to exceed at javelin throw, and began to perform very well on the National circuit at different events despite his very young age.
After witnessing his talent, hard work, and potential, GoSports inducted him into the Para Champions Programme in 2019 and he has only got better since then.

Sumit Antil Career
Primarily, Sumit wanted to become a wrestler & was constantly training in the akhara. However, his dreams remained dreams after he met with an accident when he was 17 years old. While he was driving his bike, he got into an accident with a tractor & the incident resulted in an amputated leg.
After knowing that he won’t be wrestling in his life ever again, he was very upset. However, he wanted to try out other sports. He primarily wanted to become a shot putter & met Virender Dhanakar for guidance in the sport. Dhanakar introduced Sumit to Naval Singh, a prominent javelin coach. On discussion, Naval suggested Sumit become a javelin thrower.
Sumit was so dedicated to sports that he always showed up at training on time regardless of time. After training hard, he began to appear at various competitions internationally. He secured a silver medal for India at the World Para Athletics Championships in 2019. This is when he decided to go to the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 & booked a ticket for himself.
Many Indians had great hopes for him at the Paralympics 2020. Fortunately, he has succeeded in keeping up with the people’s expectations. During the finals, he has broken a world record by throwing the javelin to a distance of 68.55 meters in his fifth attempt. This helped him win the gold medal for India at the Paralympics. This javelin throw was a world record where he broke all previous records which are actually set by himself. He became the second Indian to secure a gold medal for India at the Tokyo Paralympics after Avani Lekhara.
