Mary Kom was born on 24 November 1982 in Kangathei village, Moirang Lamkhai in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur in India. Mary Kom was born in a very poor region of India. Mary Kom Parents were tenant farmers who worked in Jhum fields. Mary Kom grew up helping her parents with their work in farm-related chores and she also went to school and learn athletics initially. Mary Kom’s father was a Wrestler in his younger days. She had the quality of being responsible from the start itself, as she took care of her three younger siblings. 

Mary Kom studied at Loktak Christian Model High School at Moirang up to her sixth standard and thereafter attended St. Xavier Catholic School, Moirang, up to class VIII. Mary Kom was very much interested in Playing different sports during her schooling days. she took a good amount of interest in athletics, especially Javelin and 400 meters running. 

Mary Kom after the VIII standard, Kom moved to Adimjati High School, Imphal, for her schooling for classes IX and X, but was unable to pass the matriculation exam. Thereafter she quit her school and then she gave her exams from NIOS, Imphal, and completed her graduation from Churachandpur College.

Mary Kom in her Schooling days participated in many Sports like 400-meters, Volleyball and Football, etc. But She switches from athletics to Boxing in 2000 when she was inspired by the success of Dingko Singh. Then she started her training under her first Coach K. Kosana Meitei in Imphal. Mary Kom at the age of 15, took a decision to leave her hometown to study at a Sports Academy in the State Capital Imphal. Thereafter she trained under the Manipur State Boxing Coach M. Narjit Singh, at Khuman Lampak, Imphal. Mary Kom’s illustrious career took place at a very early age when she was only 15 years old she leaves her hometown and went to Sports Academy to study in Imphal. Her father initially did not agree with her choice of Sport as he was concerned that her face might get hurt her Face which will spoil the chances of her marriage. But later her father started supporting and understood her love for Boxing when she won the State Boxing Championship in 2000 and then Mary Kom Won her first Gold in World Championship in 2002 in Antalya and then went on to win Gold Medals five more times.

In the year 2005, Mary Kom Married Karung Onkholer Kom (Footballer). Kom took a short hiatus from boxing. After she and Onkholer had their first two children, Kom again started training.

In the 2008 Asian Women’s Boxing Championship, Mary Kom won Silver Medal and then Fourth Successive Gold Medal in AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in China. Gold Medal at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam. In 2010, Kom won the Gold medal at the Asian Women’s Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan and her fifth consecutive gold at the 2010 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Barbados.

In the 2010 Asian Games, Kom competed in the 51 Kg category and won the Bronze medal. In 2011, she won gold in the 48 kg class at the Asian Women’s Cup in China.

  • Up to 8th standard, she studied in the village school, and later, for the 9th and 10th standards, she moved to Imphal. However, when she failed in her exams, she dropped out of school and decided to give her 10th exams privately.
