Deepak Punia is an Indian Freestyle Wrestler who Specializes in the 86 kg event. Deepak Punia represented India and earned a Silver medal for his homeland at the World Wrestling Championships in the freestyle 86 kg category and secured a place in the 2020 Summer Olympics. Deepak Punia was born in the Jhajjar district of Haryana. Deepak Punia credits famed Indian wrestler, Sushil Kumar as a constant source of support and guidance. After joining the Chhatrasal Academy in Delhi, Sushil Kumar helped the young Punia with his training and other necessities such as sponsorship and life guidance. He even told him to reject joining the Army and instead focus on only wrestling.

Deepak Punia’s father and grandfather were professional wrestlers who would compete at local tournaments (Dangals) and he was subsequently introduced to the sport at the age of 4. He traveled with his cousin to local tournaments and began competing in them himself.

Indian Wrestler Deepak Punia lost the semi-final bout against USA’s David Morris Taylor in the men’s 86kg freestyle wrestling at the Tokyo Olympics on the 5th of August 2021. Taylor won the bout comprehensively by 10-0 in a one-sided affair.

Deepak Punia was born in Haryana’s Jhajjar region. Wrestling is always an alternative for individuals in Jhajjar village. Subash Punia, Deepak’s father, is a dairy farmer who used to take the young Deepak to Dangles. Deepak began his wrestling career at the age of five at an akhara led by Arjuna Awardee Virender Singh Chhara in his hometown. Throughout his career, his father has been quite supportive.

Subash Punia, his father has been traveling 60 kilometers to his training location every day since 2015 to feed him milk and bananas. Deepak is a disciplined wrestler, which he inherited from his father. His father has worked hard for his job, and his success on Deepak’s mat has improved his family’s financial situation. Since he was seven years old, Deepak has been making his family proud.

Deepak Punia chose wrestling as a profession in order to ensure a better life for his family. He was offered a position as a sepoy in the Indian Army. Late that year, Sushil Kumar encouraged Deepak not to settle for minor things and to dream big in life. He also asked him to emphasize wrestling. Deepak Punia took his advice and began working hard for his wrestling career. Within three years, Deepak had won several major titles in his age group.

Deepak was introduced to wrestling by his father when he was 4-year-old. While growing up, he had watched several local mud wrestling in his village of Chhara. He comes from a village that’s well known for mud wrestling. His cousin, Sunil Kumar, older than him, is a popular name in the local dangal (wrestling) circuit and Deepak would often escort his cousin to the village wrestling arena.

Deepak Punia toured Chhatrasal Stadium in 2015, which is primarily famed for wrestling training. At the stadium, he began his training with legendary wrestler Guru Satpalji. Deepak then competed at the World Cadet Championship but did not win a medal.

He won the Sub-Junior World Championship the same year. Deepak subsequently chose to compete for the title of Junior World Champion. He competed in the World Junior Championship three times. He did not get a medal the first time, a silver medal the second time, and a gold medal confidently the third time.

Deepak won the gold medal in the 86kg division at the Asian Junior Championships in 2018. He won a silver medal at the World Junior Championships the same year.

Deepak Punia earned bronze at the Asian Championships in 2019. He also represented India at the World Junior Championship, where he won a gold medal. Deepak Punia was then invited to compete in the World Championship 2019 in Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Deepak was unable to compete at the World Championship suffering from an ankle issue. Hasan Yazdani, an Iranian wrestler, won gold against Punia in the 86 kg world championship. He was awarded a silver medal, however, he collected 82 points during the game, which was more than the winner.

Deepak Punia also won the world title in the 86 kg weight class. Deepak beat Carlos Arturo Izquierdo Mendez to earn India’s fourth Olympic qualifier for Tokyo 2020.
